Every number from official NCRB tables, read by a person against the original PDF
India's courts owe women an answer.
Public numbers on crimes against women, from the police station to the verdict. Plain words, every state, and a source for every figure.
Data as of: 2024, the latest year NCRB has published. NCRB's Crime in India comes out about a year after the year ends, so 2025 figures are not out yet.
Waiting for a verdict, end of 2024
1,85,785
rape cases still waiting for trial in court at the end of 2024, the most in the 8 years in our data (2017–2024).
20,587
rape trials completed in 2024
~9 yrs
to clear the queue at that pace, with no new cases
Our own arithmetic, not an NCRB figure: 1,85,785 ÷ 20,587 = 9.02, rounded.
* 2024 combines cases under the old IPC and the new BNS, and NCRB moved to new software (CCTNS 2.0).
Guess first
Out of 100 rape trials that ended in 2024, how many ended in a conviction?

The fall that isn't
The rape total hides a change in recording. Cases of women 18 and over rose 28%.
Since 2017, many states file rapes of girls under 18 under the child-protection law (POCSO) instead, which moves them out of the rape total. Girls in the rape table went from 10,059 in 2017 to 784 in 2024. Cases of women 18 and over went from 22,500 to 28,752.
28% is our arithmetic: (28,752 − 22,500) ÷ 22,500. Girls' cases = all rape cases minus cases of women 18 and over.

Where 2,06,777 cases went
Rape cases in court in 2024: 9 in 10 were still waiting at year end.
1,85,785
still waiting at year end (89.8%)
15,555
trials ended without a conviction (7.5%)
5,032
convictions (2.4%)
405
left the court list in other ways (0.2%)
Percentages are our arithmetic on NCRB's counts: each part ÷ 2,06,777. “Ended without a conviction” = trials completed (20,587) − convicted (5,032). “Another way” = total − pending − completed.
Before court: police had 39,274 rape cases to investigate in 2024; 81.3% of the cases they finished investigating went to court with a chargesheet.
Backlog: 1,27,868 waiting at the end of 2017, 1,85,785 at the end of 2024. It grew every year in between.
